Maupin Memorial Hero Workout 2025
Bare Hands Crossfit, Columbia, IL
Matt Maupin (US army) was the first ever POW of the Iraq War. On April 9th 2004, Matt’s fuel truck convoy was attacked resulting in the largest attack on a supply convoy in the history of the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars.
Matt was held as a POW for an undetermined amount of time. Ultimately his remains were found in 2008, three years after his unit returned home. Matt was from the Cincinnati suburb of Batavia, OH.
Upon his return home, his funeral was held at Great American Ball Park. The funeral was attended by thousands and he was finally laid to rest in the presence of his family, fellow soldiers and friends.
Maupin was created by Dustin Row, founder of Songs4Soldiers, and Scott Harres, former owner of BareHands CrossFit. Dustin fought in Iraq with Matt and was involved in the same ambush that lead to him being a POW.
The workout was designed around Matt's fitness interest's and symbolic to the date that he was captured.
The Maupin HERO Workout (WOD) is in remembrance of SSG Matt Maupin of Batavia, OH. Matt was taken POW during the Iraq War in 2004. His remains were unfortunately uncovered in 2008. The founder of Songs4Soldiers served with Matt and survived the attack. Per Matt's mom's request, 100% of the proceeds of this event will go to Songs4Soldiers aiding them in their mission of helping fellow combat veterans! All ages, fitness levels welcome.
